~Lammas~
Also known as Lughnasad, Festival of Lugh, August Eve, Festival of Breads, & the First Festival of Harvest This is celebrated August 1 or 2

On Lughnasad, the altar is decorated with husks of barley, oats, grain, wheat, bread or fruit. On this sabbat, Wiccans pay homage to the waning Sun King as we anxiously await the up coming harvest. Also known as the Festival of Bread, various kinds of bread are made, then shaped into forms, especially the sun or man, which is representative of the God. Lammas is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "loaf-mass". All forms of corn, especially corn grain, are also a mainstay of this sabbat. Providing nourishment in a variety of foods that cross cultural lines. corn is a comfort food for people of many nations. Now is the season to perform rituals of protection and hope, as the reward of a season of hard work is still unknown. Other traditions that you can do to celebrate this sabbat include weaving corn dollies and visiting orchards, lakes, fields and wells. Herbs and flowers associated with Lughnasad include acacia flowers, all grains, aloe, cornstalks, cyclamen, fenugreek, frankincense, heather, hollyhock, myrtle, oak leaves, sunflower and wheat. Traditional foods of Lughnasad include barley cakes, star shaped cake or cookies, wild berries, apples, rice, bread (such as wheat, oat, and especially corn), nuts, roasted lamb, grapes, pears, potatoes, turnips, berry pies, elderberry wine, ale and meadowsweet tea. Since we are celebrating the wheat and grain harvest, little meat is consumed this sabbat.
